Today is day 4 of our affordable girls trip in Florida!
Today’s entry will pay homage to Tom Hanks so just hear me out. What started out as a crab-tastic day (we were all super crabby) turned out to be another fun one! “Houston, we have a problem.”
We tried to get up early and take advantage of the day but none of us slept good the night before.
Around 4am I had a dream that there was a rat in my hotel bed. I woke up yelling “Ah! There’s a rat in my bed!” to which the kids promptly woke up, I jumped out of bed, arms flailing. Anni turned on the light and Lex, being the voice of reason, calmly said, “Mom, there IS NO rat.” I was ready to argue with her but finally realized it was one of those damn dreams where you’re sleeping and dreaming in your dream. I guess you had to be there.
We all fought over what to do today. We couldn’t reach a consensus. I mean, if “there’s no crying in baseball!” I’m almost positive that Tom Hanks also said “There’s NO FIGHTING ON VACATION”. We ended up at the pool bar. Lex ordered a strawberry daiquiri at which point she was carded. Well duh, she doesn’t look 17 much less 13. She forgot to specify “virgin”. We listened to live music while we ate. That was certainly a version of “Your Body Is A Wonderland” that I hadn’t heard before.
We swam for a bit (Anni sat poolside) and enjoyed the sun. Everyone was in a MUCH better mood after lunch. We discussed what to do next...and we made a decision! And we all liked the plan! And the angels rejoiced! Tom Hanks probably had nothing to say anymore.
Off to Wonder Works! I know they have them (and Ripley's) in touristy areas but we honestly never even gave it a thought. At a little over $90 for the 3 of us for tickets, I was skeptical. It was very cool. Think of a cross between The Magic House and St. Louis Science Center. We had a blast. Lots of short clips (like 10-20 seconds...ain’t nobody got time for longer. Ok maybe I lied, there’s like two that are long.)
We experienced a hurricane, Lex trained to be an astronaut, did the high ropes course, and they played music on the floor piano (think the movie Big) but I couldn’t convince them to get their fortunes read by Zoltar (also in Big). They’d never seen the movie (so I’ll add that to our list) they were just judgy mcjudgertons and wouldn’t play along. All in all, this was a pretty fun place to check out.
We grabbed dinner at The Wicked Wheel which had fried chicken that was very similar to Hodak's in St. Louis. It’s a must try if you’re down this way. Anni has commandeered the balcony as a meeting space for her conference calls with BFF’s. Lex is playing on her phone. I’m ready to catch some sleep. Tomorrow is our last day and we are going to play hard and take advantage of our last day of fun.
“My mama always said, 'Life was like a box of chocolates. You never know what you're gonna get.'" Let’s hope for a wonderful memory-filled day tomorrow visiting with family.
