We woke up early to catch a private car service to take us to the bus station. That just makes me laugh, the irony in it. However, that’s what the riad booked.
It’s a good thing we bought our bus tickets in advance because that bus was packed. It was a nice SupraTours motor coach bus with assigned seats so it really wasn’t bad at all. The drive was a little less than 3 hours with a stop halfway for 15 minutes.
Essaouira is a seaside town and is really pretty. Located on the Atlantic Coast of Morocco, it is a surfers paradise. The waves are massive and honestly I’d be afraid to be near the water.
Our first stop was at Chez Zack’s Restaurant that we had seen on YouTube with fresh catches of the day. I had the fresh fish, grilled. It was ok. Ed had the lobster. I had a few bites. I don’t usually like lobster but wow it was pretty awesome. The 3 flights of stairs UP made for a nice view too. The sea birds were well behaved. They waited until we left the table before attacking our leftovers.
We shopped and went to the ramparts that were in Game of Thrones. The view was amazing but the surf was incredibly rough. I did get some great video from this area.
The shopping was disappointing as it all looked imported from elsewhere and not made there.
We had an afternoon snack of some crème brûlée and headed back to the bus station to wait for our chariot. It wasn’t bad. I’d take a motor coach again as public transportation. Tickets, round trip for four of us for a 3 hour drive each way was around $67. We had fine dining when we got back: McDonald’s which was delicious. We were all craving American food.
Now if you remember my India trip, I was duped with Burger King and KFC with flavor but Moroccan McDonald’s was pretty spot on, minus the fries.
Overall a fun day and would recommend checking out this town for a day trip.
