Bangalore-A home away from home

We made it to Nisha’s home after midnight and I was beat! I awoke to a lively family! We have a houseful here. Her mother and father in law, brother in law (who will be here later), Nisha, Sumanth, their 3 year old son Purvi, her mom and dad and sister Anusha. Nisha’s family traveled just to meet me! I came downstairs and said “good morning”. An attempt was made at least. They laughed but understood what I was trying to say.

For breakfast I had a wonderful dosa (pancake) with sweet coconut chutney (made by hand), and they made me mashed potatoes! It was delicious. After breakfast I passed out gifts to everyone that I brought.

I watched as they prepared food for lunch later. Mashing jaggery by hand, cleaning and preparing spinach, and using a mortar and pestle crushing cardamom by hand. Very cool.

Out on the street there were vendors that would come by with carts and megaphones and announce what they were selling.

I took pictures of their shrine in their home. It is absolutely amazing. Their house is amazing. I love it here and feel so comfortable. I attempted to watch a Kannada (that’s the dialect they speak in Southern India in this state) soap opera which was a little (ok a lot) hard to follow. For lunch Anusha prepared my favorite, palak paneer, and I had some handmade bread and some mashed potato. Best I’ve ever had!

Nisha, her mom, her sister and I ventured out for shopping. We took an Uber there and I bought some great snacks to bring back. On the way back we took an auto rickshaw-this was so fun! I still have this cold which I think might be turning into more like a sinus infection so I rested for 3 hours! I’m still sleepy.

One of the gifts I brought Purvi was a bubble gun. We played with that before dinner. He was entertained! The street was starting to bustle at night as the sun set. Not as many horns but they’re there. It’s a quieter neighborhood than Delhi, at least where Nisha lives. Motorcycles on the streets, looking up the other way you can see the tailor is still open after 6pm, working in her shop. She is tailoring the saree that Nisha bought for me.

We headed to dinner and had a delicious vegetarian meal with Indian and Chinese dishes. It was so good! I was happy to take them all out tonight to celebrate family and friends who are family. (See group picture)

A great day!
